General Rules & Requirements

Driver's License Required

You must have a valid driver's license to operate a golf cart in The Villages. This applies to both residents and visitors.

Speed Limits

  • • Multi-modal paths: 20 mph maximum
  • • Designated roads: Follow posted speed limits
  • • Recreation areas: 15 mph or as posted
  • • Town squares: 5 mph in pedestrian areas

Where You Can Drive

  • • Multi-modal paths (tunnels and bridges)
  • • Designated golf cart roads
  • • Recreation center parking areas
  • • Shopping center paths

Note: Golf carts are NOT permitted on US-27/441 or other state roads.

Safety Requirements

  • • Use headlights after sunset
  • • Signal turns using hand signals
  • • Yield to pedestrians at all times
  • • Keep to the right on multi-modal paths
  • • Pass on the left only when safe
  • • No passengers under 14 in front seat

Prohibited Actions

  • • No driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • • No texting or phone use while driving
  • • No exceeding passenger capacity
  • • No driving on sidewalks
  • • No racing or reckless driving

Safety Tips

Daytime Driving

Stay alert, watch for pedestrians and cyclists, and be courteous to other drivers.

Nighttime Driving

Always use headlights and taillights. Drive slower and be extra cautious in tunnels.

Wet Conditions

Reduce speed on wet paths. Allow extra stopping distance and be cautious on turns.

With Passengers

Ensure all passengers are seated before moving. Never exceed the cart's passenger capacity.
